Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons

Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Stalking Tails in Key West!

The bonefishing has been exceptional and should continue to be great into the fall months as we approach Labor Day. There are also plenty of schooling Permit around the flats and channel edges during the new moon tides. Baby tarpon and the occasional big fella are available during the mornings and evenings and also during the day on the flats. Naturally, the best time to fish is during the early morning hours until the water temps get too close to 90 fahrenheit. The best summer and early fall fishing is for the Tailing Bones and Permit on the flats. I enjoy hunting for them by boat and on foot, wading the flats on known grass flats where they feed in skinny water. The stealth approach works best, carefully shuffling forward. When you spot the tails you then try to position your angle quietly so as not to make noise and spook the fish. If you get some good shots, then your cast must land the fly within a foot or two of the feeding fish, again with little noise from you or the line/fly landing in the feeding zone. A gentle "plop" of the fly is best just enough to get the attention of the feeding fish. That presentation will often induce a strike and angling success! Before you travel to the Keys, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304. Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
