Summer Heat has arrived, and the fishing has actually been more consistent. July August and September are usually our slowest time. The heat, schools starting, and of course the nice weather up north keeps tourist from flocking down to the southernmost point. The visitors might now be coming in drones but the fish seem to be. The mahi fishing has been consistent, even more than May and June. Although unless you find something floating schools have not been prevalent. We have been picking up one or two fish through-out the day averaging a fish every 20 min. Wahoo, Marlin, and Sailfish have also been being caught in the fleet almost on a daily basis.
Bonefishing has been on fire in the back country. I used to tell people if they want a epic bonefish bite go to the Bahamas. Now it seems like we may be the new destination for these strong fighting fish. Capt Tony on the Pathfinder has been finding and catching these fish every trip. He reported seeing schools of 10-20 fish the entire morning yesterday! With the little wind and big tides permit and tarpon have been sighted and hooked as well.
What have we done lately? Fishy Business Charters has been busy with installing new engines on both boats. Fishing tournaments, chartering, and prepping for season. We fished the Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament Securing 2nd place with a nice bull dolphin on the first day! The VFW Tournament we caught a ton of fish but ended up not finding a fish to place. The Key West Marlin tournament was exciting this year! The 3 day tournament had many marlins hooked and caught. We sat in 5th place day 1. On Day 2 we moved up sitting in 2nd with another sailfish release. Day 3 we got our fun fish a sailfish quickly and went for the big one. One boat got two blue marlin that day! A two marlin day is almost unheard of these days at least in the Florida keys. At the end of the day we didn't get our shot at a marlin and ended the tournament sitting in 5th place out of 39 boats. Overall we did well in all the tournaments and made a showing on the board.
Looking back at my notes last year we had successful fishing offshore and on the reef with mahi mahi and snappers/ groupers in September. October last year we saw one of the best wahoo bites that we have seen in years especially the 3 days before and after the full moon. We did well with swordfishing getting hooked up on every trip as well. If some of these fish are on the Bucket list September and October might be the time to come down!
