Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

High winds, cold and muddy water and rough seas will put a damper on most all fishing in Key West this week end. On Thursday, one could witness the slow down of cooperation of all species of fish by the hour. It was like a rheostat being slowly turned down. All along the reef, anglers reported the bite slowing, hour by hour, until it just stopped. Top and bottom, not a bite. The sudden change of weather is the culprit for sure. I know that it sounds like gloom and doom; however this will open the door for some great fishing ahead. Now we are in for some winter fishing. With water temperatures falling, we can expect even more species. We have had some of the best fall fishing that I have seen in years. Full bag limits of RED SNAPPER, MUTTON SNAPPER, BLACK and RED GROUPERS, WAHOO, DOLPHIN and lots of BLACKFIN TUNA, BONITO and SAILFISH. As soon as the weather levels out, we may expect, in addition to the above, large numbers of COBIA, smoker KINGFISH, CIRO and SPANISH MACHEREL as well as a host of other fun species such as BARRACUDA and JACK CREVALLE.
The Gulfstream is well to the south of the reef line and we may have to wait a while for the pelagic species to return, but I think that we are in for some of the best winters fishing that we have had for many years. All water to the north of us is very cold and this should congregate all of the species where the warm and cold water mix to make the perfect temperature for each species. The cold water from the north meets the warm water from the Gulfstream right here in Key West. Watch for next weeks report. I think it will be great.
That's it for now, Tight lines and good fishing.
