Dolphin Hot

Capt. Bob Brown
June 30, 2008
Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The offshore bite off of Marathon has been highlighted lately by some big billfish like Blue Marlin and Swordfish, but the Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) have been the main target of offshore anglers. Most boats venturing offshore have found the Dolphin fishing good and the fish friendly from 250ft of water, or about 7 miles offshore on out to about 15 miles offshore. So shorter runs have been the norm lately for some great fishing for school sized Mahi's and a few larger specimens mixed in. Like I mentioned above, there have been some big Blue Marlin showing up as well in the spread when offshore trolling and some boats making the longer run offshore have been rewarded with some swordfish including one on the Native Sun out of 7 mile marina this week. Swordfish are fished out on the edge of the wall out about 25-30miles out and requires some different tackle from the normal offshore gear.

Tarpon have still been biting at some of the middle keys bridge locations and some fish have been moving up the shorelines in their normal migratory patterns. Look for the tarpon to be just offshore and heading northerly along the shores this time of year. Best bet is to throw live blue crabs in their path once you have located them.

Reef and wreck fishing has been good in the middle keys with some great yellowtail snappper fishing on the reef and some large mutton snapper showing up on the deep atlantic side wrecks. Look for the bite to be great for snappers in the next few weeks.

If you would like more info on fishing in the middle keys, check out our web site. Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
