Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Offshore - Dolphin & Tuna

Lots of happy anglers ventured offshore the past couple of days here off of Marathon and the middle Keys! Quite a few decent "schoolie" Dolphin have been coming in from just beyond the reef in 120-200 ft of water. Today, tons of flying fish in the area were giving away the location of the schools of Dolphin and all the charter boats come in with nice catches. Most of the fish are of the "school" variety ranging from 3-15lb. A few larger fish have been reported, but mostly just the smaller fish so far this March. But there has been plenty of them and the action has been great! Lots of debris and weedlines further out have also produced plenty of fish.

Also on the offshore scene, the Blackfin Tuna have started to heat up on Marathon's west hump and several other offshore humps. Nice sized fish have been coming in on the boats fishing with live bait and plenty of smaller Tuna have been hitting the lures and feathers when trolled. The bite has been good early and late, before and after the boat traffic arrives. A few large sharks have also been reported seen at the humps and several have been making the Tuna their dinner. February through April used to be the months that many large Mako Sharks would show up at the humps, but few have been spotted in recent years. You never know, one just might show up so keep your eyes peeled when fishing the humps this time of year!

Tarpon Leaps Continue to improve!

More and more Tarpon are showing up at the 7 mIle bridge and other Marathon area bridges in the past week or so. A recent cool snap slowed them up for a couple days, but the action has heated back up recently. Some nice fish in the 100-150lb. class have been caught the past two days! Tarpon fishing can be a total rush when you hook up one of these large bruisers in the dark! Best baits have been live Mullet and Pinfish along with casting lures after dark. Best times are dawn and dusk and around the tide changes. For more info on Tarpon or offshore fishing in the Marathon area, check out our website!

Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!

Capt. Bob Brown, Jr.
