Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Slammers & Sails
Some nice sized "slammer" Dolphin have been showing up in the Marathon and middle Keys area the past few days. Lots of decent schoolies have been around also, making for some hot action on the offshore scene. Some larger Dolphin in the 30-40lb. class were caught yesterday in the 300-500ft. range. Schoolies were hanging around large patches of bay grass that blew out offshoe on the last north wind in 200-600ft. The past few days has seen an increase in the numbers of fish so I guess Dolphin season has begun!
Also on the offshore scene, strong east winds the past few days has had a few of the migrating fish such as Sailfish, Cobia, and Hammerhead Sharks starting to tail along the reef edge in 100-180ft of water. A great color change has existed lately aiding in the spotting of fish as they track through the dirtier water or "lighter" side of the color change. Dolphin have been coming down the "darker" side of the change as well. Strong westerly currents have put a slow down on the tailing action a bit the past three days, but some Sails and nice Cobia up to 50+lb. have been caught! Good luck and hang on to your hat if venturing out the next few days after "tailing sails"!
Tarpon are Hot!
The annual run of the "Silver King" has been going on for a few weeks now at the Marathon and middle keys bridges. The past few days have been good even though the breezy conditions have put a bit of a damper on the bite. We had 4 fish hooked up, landing 2 last night and several other boats also had multiple hook ups. Best bite has been in the evening after sundown and into the dark on the incoming tide. Live Mullet and Pinfish have been the best baits. Also, artificials have been working after dark casting up tide of the bridge pilings. Try a "Bomber Long-A" colored red & white or Blue and Silver.
Well, got to go "bait up" for tonight's tarpon trip. Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
