Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Offshore Bites

The offshore fishing off of Marathon and the middle Keys has seen some mixed results the last few days. The Sailfish action on the reef edge in 100-200ft has been spotty with a few pods of fish being raised and caught near Sombrero Light and off of Bahia Honda Key in 130-160ft. of water. We caught a nice Sail a few days ago off of the kite while achored in 60ft. of water while we were catching large Yellowtail Snapper. The Dolphin bite has been sporatic as well as warmer weather heats them up and cool fronts cool them off. Looks like an extended period of warm weather is in store for the Keys now and the Dolphin fishing should improve on a daily basis. Nice catches of Tuna have been coming in from the West Hump along with some Skipjacks and Bonito.

Snapper & Mackerel heat up the Bay!

The water is finally warming back up to normal temperatures in Florida Bay and the fishing action has warmed up as well. Nice catches of Spanish Mackerel have been common from Sprigger Bank to Bullard Bank and from 8-12 miles offshore of Marathon. Snapper action has been excellent around Long Bank and near East Bahia Honda Key around the tall grass beds. The Bomb craters near Little Pine Key have also been full of Snapper along with some Jacks and Pompano.

7 mile Tarpon

The Tarpon action at the famous 7 mile bridge here in Marathon has been heating up with some boats hooking up 3-6 Tarpon on their 4 hour trips lately. The after dark bite has been the best on the slower tide which has been the "incoming" lately. The early morning bite should be excellent this week also as we are falling off the full moon toward the new moon which means the moon will be out at 5AM when you venture out to hook up your first silver king of the day. With the coming warming trend this week it will only get better!! Lots to look forward to this week so get out there and enjoy your favorite type of fishing. Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
