Marathon, Florida Keys

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Biting Still

The local Sailfishing off of Marathon has been very good for the past few weeks and this week has been hot off of Sombrero Light. Good numbers of Sails have been reported off of Tennessee Reef light and off of American Shoal light as well. Sailfish have been hanging out from the reef edge in 50-60ft of water out to about 220ft. Some multiple hook-ups have been happening as Howard and Warren Martin found out last week fishing on the "Sundance" as we caught six sailfish in two days with a double header and a triple header in the mix. Live Ballyhoo, Pilchards, Blue Runners, and Goggle Eyes have been the best baits off of Marathon. There has also been good Sailfishing reported off of Islamorada and Key Largo. Look for the Sails to continue to delight anglers off of the middle Keys for the next couple months!

Reef Bite Slower

The reef fishing took a hit with the cool weather we have had recently. The Yellowtail have been biting on the patch reefs, but the deeper reef has been slow. Some Mackerel have made up for the lack of Snapper the past few days however and the bite for Kings and Cero Macks has been good. Some big Mangrove Snapper have been reported also on the patch reefs so not all has been gloomy on the reef.

Cobia Around

Good numbers of Cobia are starting to show up in the Keys and the next few months should be peak time to find them on the Atlantic side of the Keys. There should be plenty of Cobes out on the gulf wrecks, but may not bite too good until the water warms back up from the last record cold weather. All is all fishing is pretty darn good here in the Keys and the warming trend forecasted for the next couple weeks should heat up the action even more.

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!

Capt Bob Brown, Jr
