Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cool weather heating up the King bite!
The recent cool snap in Florida has started to heat up the reef edge where the King Mackerel move in during the winter months. Some great catches of big kings have been reported up and down the reef edge in 40-140ft of water from Duck Key to Big Pine Key. Some schools of smaller kings have been around also. Some big kings have migrated into hawk's channel around the humps in 30+ft of water and back in Florida Bay around wrecks in the 15-30mile range from shore. Some of these bayside Kings have been reaching the 50lb mark! Live blue runners fished in the kite is a great way to find a large King Mackerel. Also, try slow trolling live baits along the reef edge in 50-150ft of water to get some good results.
Sailfish action has heated up a bit also in the Marathon area with some good numbers of fish showing up near Delta shoal and Sombrero light. Several fish were caught in the area off of Bahia Honda key this week as well and some off of Big Pine shoal. Look for the Sailfish action to heat up even more with the next couple cold fronts.
Wahoo around!
Some nice Wahoo have been hitting the docks lately and some have been in the 50lb class! The area just off of the middle keys has been producing some good numbers of Wahoo on weedlines with floating debris. The Wahoo have been hanging around the debris mostly. Trolling diving lures, and lures with a tendency to fish a bit deeper than standard trolling lures have been producing the best. This has been a nice surprise lately for offshore fishermen who have been braving the breezy conditions that we have had this week. Don't be afraid to troll those lures at a good speed.... Wahoo can probably out swim your boat at any speed!
Reefin
The reef fishing has been producing good catches of Yellowtail snapper and Black Grouper this week and on the 'Sundance' we have had some nice Grouper up to 25lb. The reef zones have had some nice sized Yellowtail too with some up to 6lbs this week on our boat. Plenty of Spanish and Cero Mackerel have been covering the patch reefs along with some huge Mangrove Snapper this week. Red Grouper have been aplenty too but mostly of the undersized variety but a few keepers have made thier way into anglers fishboxes this week off of Marathon. If you would like more info on fishing in the Marathon and middle Keys area, check out our web site.
Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
