Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cool Fronts - Hot Bites

The winter pattern of a cool front every week or so seems has set in in the Keys and the fishing has heated up with winter time migratory species that like to come down to the Keys to escape the cooling water temps further north. King Mackerel, Sailfish, Cobia, & Spanish Mackerel tent to migrate into the Keys this time of year and the recent cooling trend has heated up the bite for all the above mentioned species. The Spanish Mackerel bite has been red hot in Florida Bay along with thier kissing cousins the Cero Mackerel which have been biting ferociously on the Atlantic patch reefs this past week. Some excellent King Mackerel action has been going on as well with some big boys hitting the docks at around 40lb. Mostly school sized Kings have been in the area but we did break off about a 40lb fish the day before yesterday. Sailfish have been heating up around the American Shoal area this week and some good numbers have also been showing up around Tennessee Reef light and Sombrero light. Live baiting using the kite and fishing Blue Runners, Goggle eyes, and Threadfin Herring has been hot lately. The old stand by way of live baiting with Ballyhoo and Pilchards has been productive as well and a few Sails have been caught lately by fishing a deep rod with a live bait that most boats use to target Mackerel. The deep rod can be fished with wire leader in case of a Wahoo or King bite and Sails don't seem as bothered by the wire leader on a deep fished rod like they might on a surface line. Look for all this action to continue to be good through March. The reef fishing has picked up lately as well with some nice Black Grouper coming to the docks mixed in with great catches of Yellowtail Snapper and a few Mutton Snapper.
