Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cobia & Kings

The wreck fishing in Florida Bay has been the focus of many Keys captains this week as some breezy conditions made the Atlantic side a bit tough to fish. The action in the bay did not disappoint however with some nice catches of Cobia, big King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Grouper, Pompano, Sharks and Goliath Grouper coming in to the docks here at the 7 mile marina. There have been some nice Cobia out there in the 20-30lb class and some Kings in the 40+lb category. On several of our trips this week we caught some large Mangrove Snapper out in the bay and had some Lemon and Bull sharks topping 200lb. Look for the bay fishing to keep anglers busy for weeks to come. Some tarpon also showing up out in Fl bay this week and it is only a matter of time before the Tarpon fishing busts loose here in Marathon.

Offshore fishing.....WAHOOOOOOO!

The Marathon area has had some excellent offhore fishing in the past week. There have been a couple of breezy days but not too bad for the most part. Some good numbers of wahoo have been showing up on the edgge of the gulfstream which was only 8 miles south of Marathon this week according to NOAA weather service. There have been some good size schools of Dolphin out there as well this week mostly around some large weed lines that were out there anywhere from 275ft of water out to 650ft. Not too many larger Dolphin showing up yet but the numbers of fish seem to be increasing the past couple of weeks. Sailfishing continues to be spotty but we are looking for a hot spring on them as they migrate through the area on their way to Mexico to spawn. There should be some banner days approaching if we get the right conditions for 'tailing'. Those breezy days out of the east are the best bet when looking for sailfish action this spring and if we get the current going to the east anytime soon, the bite might just bust loose in grand keys fashion. Last year there were days where boats had catches of 30 sails in a day. We have not seen anything like that lately, but it could pick up any day and be fantastic so watch the wind and get ready for some hot sailfish action this spring.

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!

Capt Bob Brown, Jr
