Marathon, Florida Keys

Capt. Bob Brown

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish HOT!

The offshore fishing has been highlighted this week by Sailfish as area charter boats have been having great success recently. Some catches in the double digits have been reported and some boats have been catching 3-5 Sails in a partial day of fishing after spending a good part of the day reef fishing. The reef bite has been excellent as well with great catches of Yellowtail Snapper and Black grouper hitting the docks. The wreck bite on the Atlantic side has been producing some good numbers of big Mutton Snapper along with some large Amberjack and Kingfish. So the action has been excellent for middle Keys anglers and should only improve in coming weeks for King Mackerel and Sailfish leading the way. Some big Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) have been showing up on the reef edge along with the Sailfish due to the large amount of baitfish hanging on the reef edge recently. The Sailfish and Dolphin have been coming up onto the reef edge in as shallow as 30ft of water chasinig baitfish tipping off the charters where they are located. Look for the showering baitfish or frigate birds dipping low to the water in the 30-80ft depths.

Cobia Showing Up In Florida Bay

The offshore bayside wrecks have been starting to produce some nice Cobia along with tons of Spanish Mackerel. Some fish up to 40lb have been reported out in the bay mixed in with some Goliath Grouper and Blacktip Sharks. Plenty of action for a day out on the water avoiding the seas of the Atlantic side when breezy. Mangrove Snapper have been biting in the long bank area and near the 7 mile bride on the outgoing tide. The great tasting Snaps will be moving through the bridges during cool snaps so the bridge is a good target area if you are looking for some Snapper for dinner. Good luck in all your fishing adventures.
