Marathon, Florida Keys

Marathon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snapper Munching

The reef bite off of Marathon has been alive lately with lots of nice Mutton Snapper hitting the docks along with some huge Mangrove and Yellowtail Snapper. The recent cooler weather has had the snapper on the move and it seems they are showing up in good numbers on the Atlantic side patch reefs. Big Mutton snapper have been coming in from the deeper reef and wrecks but the Yellowtail and Mangroves have been hanging in 25-65ft of water on the reef edge. A nice Grouper or two have been showing up in the mix but the reef bite has been dominated by the great eating snapper the past few days.

Sailfish and Dolphin

The blue water scene off of the middle Keys has been hot lately with Sailfish being the best bet for big game and some great eating Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) have been showing up as well anywhere from the reef edge out to 650ft of water. Sailfish have been gorging on the ballyhoo on the reef edge and many have been caught as shallow as 25 ft recently. To snag yourself a few live ballyhoos, anchor and chum the patch reefs and then have your hair hook ready with a small piece of squid to get a few fiesty hook and liners, and then if your cast net skills are in order, cast net a few extras for other possibilities. Watch for the ballyhoo 'showers' when targeting sails. If you see lots of silver baitfish jumping in succession and moving a lond distance like a rain shower might, then that is usually a sailfish under those baitfish. Position the boat in front of the bait movement and cast out a live bait or two and be alert! You could be in for a double header! Sailfish action should continue to be excellent all through the winter months here in the Marathon area! If you would like more info on fishing in the Florida Keys, check out our web site!

Good luck in all your fishing adventures!
