Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

March Lion

A cold front packing very heavy winds roared through Florida like a lion this past weekend. We will bare the brunt of its effects for quite some time. Heavy winds have muddied the water and the air temperature has dropped significantly. The temperature is supposed to get closer to normal in the next week.

This past week prior to the front, fishing was as good as it gets for the winter. Tarpon showed up early due to the pleasant weather. Snook are starting to come out of the backcountry. Redfish are scarce but not impossible. The trout fishing was fabulous. Since the front, I am left with total confusion! I will tell you how guides will handle the next week.

The bait was blown to Texas for the most part. Some of us have secret places where we may be able to get some shiners but they are not to be relied on. If the wind continues it would be wise to carry shrimp with you. For those of you that throw plugs, it is a no brainer. I always rig rods with jigs when the going gets tough. A jig is the most versatile lure you can throw in the backcountry. The water temperature should not dip that much so you should be able to still catch some snook, jacks, redfish, and ladyfish. If the wind calms down, the tarpon may return. Go loaded for bear because anything is possible.

Deep dropping shrimp into holes is still a good idea. Snook, redfish, drum, sheepshead and grouper get into these places when the weather gets sketchy. The pompano will return to the passes as the week progresses. Let’s hope that the water temperature won’t drop too much. As the wind subsides, the bait will come in and the fishing should swing back into action. Until then, stay in the lee and experiment. Something good is bound to happen. I’ll see you out there.
