Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring Fling
Stiff winds and unsettled weather didn’t stop most anglers from catching fish this past week. Anglers caught snook, redfish and keeper size trout. Next week could be a repeat. It appears that we will have a disturbance that may bring some rain by the middle of the week. The good news is that the water temperature is on the rise.
The wind has been strong out of the south to southwest. That has kept the water muddy. Most of the guides that I know are fishing south of Marco. When you get south of Panther key, the water appears a little clearer. Most of the back bays have been clear as well.
The water temperature has come back to the low seventies. Snook and redfish have been coming out of the woodwork. I found a net full of shiners and was able to produce a double-digit day with snook for my clients. They also caught jacks and ladyfish. I have been getting similar reports from other guides. Jigs and flies have been working well too. We landed a thirty-inch snook that took a jig the next day.
Folks have been catching large trout in front of the islands all the way to Round key. There have been a few pompano caught while trout fishing. If we don’t get any strange weather, I would expect the fishing to remain consistent for the next week. As the water temperature rises keep your eyes open for the tarpon to return. Let’s hope that the wind tames down.
I think that we have seen the last cold spell. We are rounding the corner to spring and the fishing is bound to heat up. I hope to be writing about grand slams soon. I’ll see you on the water.
