Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fish Anyway

Even though the weather has been touch and go you can’t really complain about the fishing. Despite weak tides this past week, I had mixed reports and most of them were good. Snook, trout, and tarpon were the major players this past week. It was even more surprising that many people were catching redfish. Redfish have not been on the hit list in the past few months in our area and it is good to see that they are stretching our lines with more frequency. Live shiners, jigs, flies and shrimp have been producing good catches.

We had a front pass through Florida this past week and it brought rain and heavy winds. A lot of the guides including myself did very well considering the conditions. Young angler Eric Chalphaunt had a ninety-pound tarpon take his shiner while we were fishing for snook. Things got real interesting with a fish that size on ten-pound test. The fish won the struggle a half-hour later but we got the best part of the show.

It appears that the next week will be a little cooler. We may experience some windy days but it is supposed to be a fair week. I would expect the fishing to only get better as the week goes by. If the wind tames down, look for the sardines to return and the tarpon to get more active. They are anxious to get on with their spring ritual. Snook are returning to their old haunts and it has been easy to predict where they are going to be. As I said earlier, the redfish are showing in better numbers. I have been getting more than one at each stop that I find them. Fish around fallen bushes or points where the current is flowing. Expect to catch snook there too.

Trout has been and will continue to be a no brainer as long as the wind doesn’t blow. Folks have been catching their share in front of the islands and in the deeper runs along the islands. Cape Romano has been producing great catches. When you fish the Cape, you have the possibility of catching any of our favorite species.

It is hard not to stay pumped up this time of year. I look forward to the next day of fishing and I hope to see you out there enjoying our waters too.
