Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mellow Out
There was a significant drop in the water temperature in this past week. That made fishing difficult. Bait was darn near impossible to find unless you had a secret spot where they will hide from the elements. As the week progressed, the water warmed up a little and the bite was more productive. Small snook and a few redfish were the order of the day. Some of the guides drummed up some keeper size snook and redfish, but it was the kind of week that separated the men from the boys.
At the end of the weekend, it got sweet out and tarpon showed up in some of the bays. We had several shots at laid up fish but couldn’t make a solid connection. As long as the water temperature continues on the rise, the tarpon should continue to come in. This March weather has been cool and unpredictable so you have to take the good days as they come. That means fish as much as possible. After all, work is the curse of the leisure class.
We are supposed to be getting another low front coming our way. Temperatures should be warm over the weekend. The fishing should be good. The forecast shows that we will have a cooling period by mid week. Let’s hope that we don’t have the heavy winds that we have been having. The mornings have been mild and that is when guides and anglers alike have been catching most of their snook, redfish, and trout. I have been getting large trout where you might expect to find snook. Larger trout have a tendency to be loners and are a welcome surprise when they hit a jig or live bait.
Hopefully we can get out of this weather pattern and get down to the business of catching tarpon and larger snook. It is that time of year when the action will start to heat up. The tarpon are here. They are just circling their wagons and itching to get on with their spring ritual. Large snook will come to their deeper runs to get ready for the spawn. Redfish will gorge themselves on the masses of bait that will settle in close to shore. We will be ready. The grassflats will be loaded with happy trout. I can hardly wait. I hope you will be there when it happens.
