Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Capt. Matt Hoover
April 3, 2001
Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Wind Blows

This past week was basically a repeat of the week before. The wind has been giving most of us the fits. Most of us are catching fish but they are not coming easy. There are days when we can scrounge up enough live bait to really catch fish. The other days we have been using jigs, shrimp and corks or flies. I have had my clients freelineing live shrimp with good success as well.

Most of the snook that we have been catching have been small. There are a few keepers being caught but they are not plentiful. We have been beating the bushes in the Ten Thousand Islands for the most part. The waters around Marco have been chalky so it has kept most of us to the south. I have been catching a few redfish with my clients on almost every outing, but we have been working the bank hard. Picking apart the bank slowly while using the trolling motor has been working the best. We have also been picking up a few nice trout in the process. Jacks and ladyfish have been welcome too if you know what I mean. We need a break from the wind.

There have been enough tarpon in the area to keep things interesting. The morning half of the day has been the best time to pursue them. My anglers have had a few good shots with the fly, but most folks are getting solid connections with cutbait

We have some great weather predicted for the next week. It will be warm and sunny for the most part. There is frontal activity in the nation as usual. I for one can’t predict how much wind will be associated with the fronts to our north. Wind won’t stop us from catching fish but it would be nice to have some of those sultry days to get on with some serious tarpon action. The fish and anglers are chomping at the bit to get on with it.

It may sound like I am complaining. Well, I am. I know that we could be up north, but we aren’t! I want the spring melee to begin and the wind and cool weather is curtailing it. It is a tough job, but somebody has to do it and frankly, I’m still glad it’s me. I’ll see you on the water.
