Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fair Weather Fishing
This past week was as good as one could hope for. The mornings started out calm and warm. Those are perfect ingredients for fishing. The water has cleared a bit and the bait has returned. Everyone that I talked to caught fish this week.
Snook, redfish, and trout were the order of the day. But the main star has been tarpon. A lot of folks come to do battle with tarpon this time of year and guides are more than happy to oblige. By now, most of us have cabin fever for them and can’t wait for anglers to test their strength against the West Coast brute. Lures, live bait, cut bait and flies did the trick this week. Most of the guides that I talked to had their fair share of the action. With a watchful eye, you could see tarpon rolling in the passes and surrounding bays. The biggest problem is deciding what method you want to use to take them. Whatever you do, don’t take too long to decide. They are too much fun no matter how you do it.
Snook provided plenty of action as well this week. Live shiners did their magic for my anglers. We also caught a few redfish too. Trout, large jacks and ladyfish rounded out the action. We had great tides for fly-fishing and I heard good reports that all of the backcountry players were being caught. Most anglers are throwing some kind of baitfish pattern.
The weekend should be just as promising. It looks as if we might feel the effects of a front by the middle of the week. Let’s hope that it blows through fast. We could get used to the good fishing and we certainly deserve it. We have had such unsettled weather for months. I think that it is finally safe to say that we are past the cold spells. The fishing should only get better. This is the time of year when I can’t wait to go to work. Spring fishing is a blast and more and more people are getting into it. There is plenty of room so let’s stay courteous and friendly out there. Leave the road rage in the city. I can’t wait to see you out there.
