Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring Reward
There were plenty of fish caught thanks to another perfect week of weather. Snook of all sizes were reported this past week. Most anglers had a few encounters with redfish too. The redfish seem to be spotty. Hopefully that will change. The trout fishing has been phenomenal. They are on the grassflats around Cape Romano as well as in front of the islands. Live bait, jigs, lures and flies took fish all week. I won’t forget that tarpon fishing has been killer too.
Live bait has been available all week. There are pods of full-grown threadfin herring just offshore. Threadfin are great bait for tarpon and large snook. Many anglers waged war with large tarpon this week. My father and brother Drew boated three tarpon up to and over one hundred pounds this weekend and jumped many more. Other captains including myself had similar days. Cut bait in the passes around Marco and the Ten Thousand Islands has been working well.
Snook have been coming in all sizes this past week. Most of them have been average size but I have had reports of forty plus inch snook. There has been no set pattern as far as I can tell from reports. We are catching them in the front, middle and back. Choose your favorite method because I have had great reports from guys that throw artificial baits as well as flyfishermen.
The next week will be different as we have a front coming through as I type. It is packing stiff winds and this morning was cool. I think that we will be dealing with heavy winds all week. That is something that we are used to. It certainly won’t stop us from having great days on the water. I think that it will hamper our ability to get live bait. Most of us have a few tricks up our sleeves. This past winter taught us well.
Fishing has always been a game where you have to adapt. That is why the guys that are good get all the action. Use the windy days to your advantage. A wind blown point can become a good friend. We are too far along in spring for the water temperature to drop. That is the main concern. These fronts have a tendency to slide to the north of us. In the meantime, I’ll see you on the water.
