Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report
Bring On The Heat
A cold front slid through Florida this past week. It caused the water temperature to drop at least ten degrees. It seems as if old man winter is reluctant to release his grip on the nation. As a consequence, the fishing was touch and go. There were days when the fish were on fire and then they would go into hibernation. After the front, the bait became scarce. As the week progressed, the bait came back in and it was easier to catch a few fish.
Snook, redfish and tarpon were on the agenda this past week. While most folks caught their fair, it wasn’t easy at times. The decline in water temperature was probably the main reason why. It seemed as if every other day, the fish would light up. Most of the guides that I talked to had the same thing to say. A lot of people were throwing live bait and getting some decent snook. I had a couple of double-digit days. Then there were a couple of days when we couldn’t buy a fish. Redfish and a few large trout were in the mix. Folks that fished for tarpon did the best by using cut bait in their favorite spots.
I had good reports from anglers that used the flyrod. The morning tides were perfect. Sometimes the fish will prefer a fly over just about anything. I have seen snook take a fly instead of a scaled sardine. I don’t know why. I just know that they do it often enough to make you scratch your head over it.
Guess what? We have another cold front coming. It looks as if the bulk of it is going to go to the north of us. But there may be some strong winds associated with it. There may be isolated showers next week as well. Carry the rain gear. That seems to be the norm for the year 2001. They are forecasting eighty-degree temperatures for the next week. I see that as good news. It beats fifty-degree mornings like we had last week. I think that fishing will perk up. We need it to stay warm. We can handle the wind. Lord knows we have been fishing in it for months. Bring on the heat. I’ll see you on the water.
