Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Capt. Matt Hoover

Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishin' In The Rain

Fishing remained excellent at the beginning of this past week. Waves of bait are everywhere you go and the fish are getting fat and happy. As the week progressed a low-pressure system developed in the Gulf and dumped large amounts of rain on Florida throughout the weekend. Weather reports hint that this system could turn into a tropical depression. As it was, this system put a halt to most fishing for at least four days.

On the days that we were able to get out, the fishing was very good. There is lots of bait of all species and the action is quite good. Live bait, plugs and flies are working well. The tides have been strong all week so there was plenty of moving water. Snook are being caught around the south Marco area and throughout the Ten Thousand Islands areas. I have been catching fish around fallen bushes and in the transitions along the banks of islands. We have been catching redfish with increasing regularity. My anglers caught several redfish early in the week that were well over the limit.

Trout are over the grass around the cape and in the deeper runs where they should be. Live bait and jigs are taking the majority of fish. My clients have been catching large trout with me while fishing for snook and reds. It is an indication to me that we are starting to see a regular fishing pattern come together.

There are still some large tarpon out there. That is not unusual for this time of year. Tarpon are on their return migration and it is a good time to target these fish. My dad and brother Drew went to war with two very large fish just before the rains started this week. There are tarpon in the passes early in the morning. They will come up into the bays as the water rises. Tarpon in the ten to fifty pound range are all over the place as well. We have been hooking quite q few of them while fishing for other species.

It looks as if we may get a break from this weather in the next week. Now is the time to get out there and do some of the best fishing of the year. I will be going to Costa Rica to fish for tarpon this week. Look for my report the following week. I’ll see you on the water.
