Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Close Call
In spite of heavy winds created by hurricane Michelle, fishing was actually very productive. Fish have a tendency to turn on before a major front or change in barometric pressure. As the weekend progressed, Michelle made her presence known with stiffening winds and small downpours of rain. Monday we watched the hurricane slide by South Florida and feigned a sigh of relief.
Most of this past week remained windy. There are places where the fall bait will hide out of the wind. Most of the guides that I talked to were able to get bait and have very successful days. Captain Stacy Mullendore and I ran a split charter on Saturday and did very well on snook and redfish. My clients caught several redfish over five pounds. Small to medium snook are providing plenty of action as well. Jacks and ladyfish were all over the baits too. We are still catching large trout in snook spots too.
As strong as the wind was, you could still get out of the beach down at Caxambas and get into jacks, mackerel and ladyfish. The wind was out of the northeast so the wave action was tolerable. Snook are still roaming the beaches around Caxambas and Cape Romano.
Our weather has been a test of wits. It isn’t over yet. We have a cold front coming. I guess we can’t crab too much about it because the front is what steered the hurricane away. It will bring sun and cooler breezes and cause the water temperature to drop even further. I hope that this cooling trend is temporary. I am not ready to start using winter tactics. I’ll see you on the water.
