Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Stick n Jab
All of us guides are working our fingers to the bone. We are in the middle of our season right now and we are really earning it. We have been taking one two punches right and left here in Florida with the wicked fronts that have been roaring in every four days.
Cold fronts have plagued us through all of March and April has been a real challenge as well. Blue bird skies are no guarantee when you have 20 mph winds every day. It’s nerve racking when you have to fish where you can and not where you want. It has pretty much put the ka bosh on the tarpon fishing in our area. We should be up to our necks with them but it just isn’t so.
But not all is grim. Bait has been a challenge as well but most of us have been creative enough to get our wells stocked. We did have a couple of days where the tarpon showed real well. I went 2 for 6 one day and then a front came in and blew us off the map. That front was two weeks ago. The water temperature went from the eighties to as low as sixty eight. Wow. We have been recovering ever since. But the snook and reds have been keeping us busy. They are running hot and cold. By that I mean that you will go to six spots and pick up two fish at each one. Than you will go to a spot and hit pay dirt in a big way. Jacks, ladyfish and snapper have rounded out the mix.
Don’t get me wrong. There are tarpon here. If you are a dedicated cut bait fisherman, there is no doubt that you will have an encounter with one. I saw a few yesterday while I was running from spot to spot so I think that things are going to perk up in the tarpon department. Guides have tarpon on the brain right now because it is a well deserved diversion for us. So we keep praying for stable weather.
I have been able to get offshore in the new Pathfinder and anchor up over structure. We slammed tanker mackerel, bluefish and small kings the other day. One guy was roll casting a fly into the melee and was hooking up on almost every cast. It is refreshing to have a boat that is so versatile.
We have another front on the way. This one looks mild compared to the rest. Maybe we can get down to more serious business. I’ll see you on the water
