Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Heat
Hot summer mornings are my favorite. The catching end of the fishing business has been excellent for the past few weeks. Jigs, plugs, live bait, and flies have all had their place.
Catching live bait in our area has been tough. We keep inventing new ways to get it. Although artificial methods have been working well early in the morning, it has been best to go with live bait for most of my clients. Let’s face it; they don’t fish every day like some of us so live bait gives them the advantage that they need to have a great day.
Snook have been in the center ring. On a good day, it has not been impossible to hit double digits. They have been out on the front points to as far in as the deep backcountry. I have been catching a few redfish on each outing as well. Jacks and mondo ladyfish have been filling in the gaps. There are still a few large tarpon around so I have been keeping the big rods at the ready. Small tarpon are out in full force.
I have been catching micro shiners for some serious snapper fishing too. I use these on a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader and fish around the docks of Marco. Be prepared to have your butt handed to you if you take these fish lightly. Fifteen-inch snapper will give you a serious fight straight out of the gate. They sure go good on the dinner table. Every once in awhile I have to have a plate full. I like mine deep-fried with an extra helping of cholesterol. Expect to be schooled by juvenile gag grouper too.
Mornings are the best. By noon, it starts to cloud up for our afternoon shower. Some of these storms have heat in them so be careful. I love the summer. I’ll see you on the water.
