Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report
Just Right
This last week was made to order. The weather has been mild and the winds have been out of the southeast for the most part. Yes there are some things that would have made fishing easier. For those of you that like to catch your own bait, you might have noticed that it was scarce. Still, those that were diligent were able to find enough to get the job done. Besides, plugs, jigs, and flies took their fair share of fish anyway.
Snook and redfish were cooperative this week. I heard favorable reports from most of the people that I talked to. Snook and redfish were caught in the immediate Marco area and throughout the Ten Thousand Islands. It didn’t seem to matter where you went. My anglers caught fish from the front of the islands to the back bays. There were some large trout caught this week. I received more than one report of trout that were over four pounds. Most of them are being caught on jigs.
The tarpon fishing has slowed down. It appears that the migration has passed through our area. There are still plenty of tarpon around. These fish that remain will become resident fish until it is time for them to move on. If you target them in passes and bays, you still stand a good chance of a hookup. They become more eager to take flies and plugs. Cut bait and live offerings are still hard to beat.
We have some great months of fishing ahead of us. It will be getting hot as we move into the summer months. The fish don’t seem to mind. It is a great time to be throwing plugs. I look forward to some top water action. The best part of May is upon us. Boat traffic thins out a little and only the serious anglers are out there. It is one of my favorite times of the year. Get out and wet a line. I’ll see you on the water.
