Report for Naples, Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands

Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Lazy Days

The mornings were slightly cooler this past week. It made for pleasant fishing. Business for most of the guides has slowed down to a dull roar. There are fewer boats on the water during the weekdays. It is a time when many of us do some scouting. I like to use the down time to discover new spots. Sometimes you rediscover an old spot. I also use the time to fish with family and friends. There is bait all over the place. As a result, the fishing has been excellent.

Snook are right where they are supposed to be. Find a spot where the current it moving. Look for bushes in the water. I had a chance to fish with friend and guide Captain Stacy Mullendore. We headed straight to the Islands and caught plenty of snook and a couple of redfish. Everywhere that we went, we saw live bait. We both believe that there is going to be fantastic fall fishing. Most of the snook have been small but we have been catching a few keeper size snook with each outing. Redfish are becoming more reliable. Expect to get marauded by snappers while you are beating the bushes. They have been on the larger size too.

This week had perfect outgoing tides for flyfishing in the mornings. I had Doug Hart on my boat this week He caught four snook and one redfish on the fly. We saw plenty of other fish as well. There is no doubt in my mind that jigs and plugs are doing damage as well. From here on till the first cold fronts of winter it is going to be hard to do anything wrong.

There are still twenty to fifty pound tarpon around. Keep your eyes open for a resident hundred pounder. I caught a tarpon on Monday that was around fifty pounds. The fish ate a live shiner. Look for tarpon along the beaches and in the mouths of the passes.

People are catching large trout over the grass on Romano and in front of the islands. Most of the trout are being taken on jigs. We have been seeing pompano so don’t be surprised if you catch one while fishing for trout. Folks have been catching mackerel while they are fishing for trout too.

Fishing around the immediate Marco area and the upper Ten Thousand Islands has been excellent. We have had great tides in the last week. It is only going to get better. These are lazy days. I hope you can take advantage of the quiet time. I’ll see you on the water.
