Snook and Redfish

Capt. Matt Hoover
August 19, 2012
Marco Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing these past few weeks has been good to excellent. Snook, redfish, and the occasional tarpon have been the order of the day.
I have been throwing live bait under popping corks. The bait along the beach has been small to medium so using a cork gives you that casting consistency.
Early morning and later afternoons with moving water has been the best as is has been getting quite hot during the mid day hours.
Snook have been along the beaches and waters where you can actually see the gulf. Shorelines with knock downs will produce snook and redfish. I have been catching redfish along oyster bars as well. Snook are making a slow comeback after the freeze of 2010. The cool thing about it is that we are catching some larger snook as a result of the moratorium. That is just fine by me.
If you are looking for some food, the mangrove snapper fishing has been off the hook. We all know how yummy they are.
You may run into straggler tarpon in the passes early in the morning. I have seen a few in the quiet bays and can be caught with some dedication.
The water is going to start to cool as we round the corner going into fall. I expect the redfish to start schooling better in the 10K islands. I think it will be a banner fall for them.
