Red fish, Snapper and gator trout
The last several weeks has been a bit different since the red tide hit my fishing grounds in northern Matlacha and northward. But now it is dissipating in the areas I like to fish and the fish are turning back on. The gator trout has really started to come back in Matlacha on shrimp and gulp under a popping cork. And when you catch those lady fish save those for a snack for the reds. Since the red tide started I was on red fish almost anytime I wanted but, they didn't want to eat anything I was throwing at them. Pins, white bait, cut mullet and even shrimp wouldn't entice the bite. I would watch them check out the bait and even move it out of the way and not take the hook. Now they are hungry and lady fish was the key. Now, I am only talking in Matlacha area that I like to fish. In Pine Island sound I caught reds all over along with trout, snapper and snook before the season was over. I predict the fishing in Matlacha to keep getting better and the bites of the big fish to really get going strong as the water cleans up. The bigger snapper are definitely moving into Matlacha as my clients have all limited out on 11-12 inch snappers. The trout bite is gaining too but nearly as strong as fishing the sound.
