Fishing report June 15 2020

Matlacha - Saltwater Fishing Report

15 June 2020
World is a hectic place right now. Well, since my last report Covid-19 happened and I lost way too many trips and haven't felt much like writing.
But since April fishing for reds and snook have been great. Better each month for all species and sizes. Now in June the rainy season the water is going to be stained from all the tannins from water runoff. But also be on the lookout for water run off that is milky or smells foul. This is bad water coming from neighborhoods and fertilizers and smells like it came straight from a septic tank. Personally, once I see it I get far away from it. In South Matlacha you can see the water difference headed south and you definitely smell it. While checking it out I had bait die on me and that was all I needed to know.
So now we are in the month of June and Fishing has been great! From fishing the Harbor to the back country. Big schools of threadfins are everywhere and easy to catch. I use them for all my fishing. I cut it up in small pieces for smaller fish like snapper and larger chunks for snook and reds. Then I use them whole and alive for cobia and tarpon. I haven't been wasting my time trying to catch smaller perfect size white bait in a couple weeks. Although some of the days when the snook are chasing them I kind of wish I had them. But that's when I cast a cut bait into them and twitch it a lil bit to get the bite.
Courtesy on the water. Its been a lot better recently with a lot of courteous boaters out there. No complaining this report.
But…. Boat ramp courtesy. GOD Please prep your boat long before you are sitting on the ramp! Don't leave your boat at the ramp and go park your car. Pull off the ramp and over to the side of the dock so you're not impeding other traffic. Even if you're the only one there. It only takes a second for another fisherman to show up prepared and you have the ramp blocked. I know from my own errors this happens. At the Matlacha Park where I launch daily there is on side of the dock that will hold two 24 foot boat length wise if each boat is pulled to the ends. Don't be the guy who has a boat and ties off in the middle of the dock making others have to nose in their boat with the stern sticking in the channel. That creates a canal blockage. And lastly leave the dock as quickly as possible so others may launch and tie off their boats. I know sometimes I have to sit at the dock waiting on clients who are late. But I back my boat as far back as possible to let other use the dock as well. And even help them while I am waiting.
Lastly KAYAKERS, there is a freaking kayak launch on the other side of the park! USE IT! Kayakers take entirely too much time to launch and then take up all the space at the ramp. It really tests my patience to see the not courteous kayakers there then expect courtesy from you.
I've been fishing pine island sound, outer islands of Cayo and captiva and Boca, matlacha, the Harbor and bars in between. And when the tide is right the fishing is great. Fishing is SWFL is not like lake fishing, here you must hunt for the fish and then set up correctly to fish them in order to catch.
If you see me out there say hi! And let me know you read my reports. I will help out all I can without giving exact fishing locations but good areas to try your luck.
