Reds Snook and Gator trout

Matlacha - Saltwater Fishing Report

27 March 2018
Reds Snook and Gator trout
Fishing has been getting better and then slacks a little on each front that has come through this month. The water is warming up finally and hopefully the cold air masses are behind us. Last week I had some guy heading in out in a little boat as I was cleaning fish for my clients tell me to throw my scraps down the tube and then proceed to cussing as he was headed out. Maybe he had a case of turrets. And I kept my temper and mouth in check in front of my clients. I see all kinds of stuff at the boat ramp and out on the water. From really rude people to drunks wanting to pick a fight cause they had a bad day. Come on people, mind your own business and keep your opinions to yourself and we would all be better off. My rant is over.
Down and dirty fishing report:
Big Red fish have been biting on cut bait on the incoming tides. Have caught smaller reds on live greenbacks along with a couple biggins while throwing at snook.
Snook are biting cut bait (lady fish) and mostly on live greenbacks throwing close to the mangroves with a good moving current.
Gator trout have been biting on greenbacks. Smaller trout on shrimp and fish in about 2 feet of water with grass or oysters.
Tarpon are out there but I haven't tried for them yet.
Cobia are out there just off the flats, find some schooling rays and they should be around, throw some nice size greenbacks and see what happens. It's just too time consuming to try and put clients on cobia unless they happen to appear when you're out.
Tight lines
