Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Spring fishing is now officially in full swing. Over the last couple of weeks many things have begun to slowly change for the better. First I'd like to say that sailfishing has remained pretty consistent with at least a couple of shots per day. Fishing for these spindlebeaks should continue to be strong through mid May. Most of the fish are being caught on live baits dangled from kites.
Kingfish have also been showing up after a very slow winter. During the last week I've seen some of the largest kingfish of the year skyrocketing out of the water while attempting to eat kite baits intended for sailfish. The fish have been so nice that I've added a short trace of wire to all of my monofilament leaders to keep them from cutting through. I don't mind loosing a small king here and there but these fish have some real shoulders on them.
Among other fish that have been showing up are blackfin tuna and cobia. Most of the cobia are being caught around wrecks or cruising hawks channel. The blackfins are being caught by boats targeting sailfish on the edge of the reef.
Pretty soon the blackfins will move through in much bigger numbers and many anglers will be targeting them using lots of live chum.
Last, I'd like to say that for those of you that don't enjoy loosing sleep to go fishing this is the time to go. The afternoon bite has been excellent and will continue to be strong. Since the clocks sprung forward we have been enjoying the extra fishing time. Yesterday one of my youngest customers caught his very first sail late in the afternoon. In only a couple of hours we caught one out of two and decided to head in after out mission was accomplished. Now he is hooked and can't wait to do it again.
Miami Fishing Forecast:
Fishing should continue to improve for a while. March, April and May will provide some of the largest kingfish, tuna, and dolphin (mahi mahi)of the year. Sailfishing will continue to be strong through mid May.
