Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing onboard the Lucky Vee has been very good and very busy as I just came off an 8 day stretch of fishing several days and some nights. We have been catching sails, mahi-mahi, mackerel, shark, false albacore and tarpon. We only had two days where we had no current in on the reef and that made for a tuff day but other than those 2 days the fishing has been very good. Instead of going into a day by day recap of the fishing and making this fishing report 2 pages long I will give you a general overview of what the fishing has been like. To give you an idea of a typical day I fished 4 hours with Jeff Rody and his father yesterday. In those four hours of fishing we caught a double header of sailfish, 4 false albacores, a shark, and a mahi-mahi. This should give you some idea of what a day could be like. If we had done a full day we may have been able to add several more sailfish to our tally but all good things must come to an end as this trip did.
Let's start with the sailfish bite. This has been our most consistent bite the whole month. Some north current and you are almost assured of catching one or several of these graceful acrobats. We have been scoring some multiple sailfish days given the right conditions. All of our fish have been coming off our kite baits. We have had several times when we have had several fish on at once.
The mahi-mahi have also shown up especially when we have had some northeast to east winds. These are not you small summertime mahi-mahi but larger gaffer mahi-mahi. We have been catching these on the kite and flat lines. We have been getting a several every trip in between the sailfish bites.
Tarpon have been the most perplexing of all the species we catch this time of year. We have instances of catching four on one night and then catching nothing the next night. This pattern is starting to look a little similar to last year's pattern. I hope the fish begin to get into a somewhat more definable pattern here shortly so stay tuned and I will let you know what we have done.
Overall the fishing is good we have been having consistent action through out the day. Add in some false albacore, sharks and a kingfish or two and we can certainly bend some rods. These are some of the best times of the year to fish the Miami area. The warm weather, 72 degree water, and great fishing make this a great weekend destination.
