Biscayne nights, end of June

Capt. Bob LeMay
June 29, 2010
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

was out of town for most of last week, then tied up with family stuff... Only had time for one charter, a night trip in Biscayne Bay. We fished Friday night from 8:30 until about 1:45Am with local anglers Charlie Jones and Dr. Charles Shenker. I'm lucky enough to have them aboard once or twice a year and it's always a treat. The fishing under a full moon was a bit tougher than I anticipated but we still found small tarpon under every bridge we fished. Using strictly artificials (DOA shrimp, 1/4 oz size) and light spinning gear we jumped a half dozen fish that mostly took us to school. As usual the night scene rarely showed more than a few other anglers working the spots we hit, even on a Friday night. After midnight we pretty much had the waters to ourselves. For most of the night the fish were right at the surface but toward the end of the tide the fish laid down and our best spots never showed us a fish until we were hooked up and trying to keep the fish connected without having one jump into the boat with us. Things get dicey when a 20 to 30lb fish is hooked up right next to the skiff under a bridge with a hard current ripping... Here's a couple of photos from that night..

All of our fish were hooked up on 10lb line with a short leader of 40lb fluoro. This is Charlie Jones doing his usual quick job on any fish he encounters. He's one of a few anglers that I fish who could teach me a thing or two on any occasion...

The night scene will be on every night for the rest of the summer. When the tide allows the hour just before dark will find us working some of the permit to be found in Government Cut as the sun goes down...
