Biscayne nights, 19 July

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Only one night trip this week, so this will be a very short report. I fished Dale LeShaw a few nights ago in very poor weather. We hooked up at 9:30 Pm for a five hour trip but extended it out an extra hour after we got caught in some nasty weather. One of the nice things about fishing the north end of Biscayne Bay is that there are always bridges to shelter under in bad weather.... The squall that caught us (we were behind an island fishing a docklight and didn't see it coming...) came with high winds, lightning, and other rough entertainments. Can't remember the last time I saw such a spectacular display of cloud to cloud lightning... We waited it out then got back in action.. That night every docklight came with a supply of eating sized snappers, spooky snook, and the occasional small tarpon. The snappers were suckers for small flies and we caught them at most every stop (then carefully released them). The snook were another proposition, seeming to charge the fly then turn away... We didn't get into any decent tarpon action until the tide turned later that night. Once the tide was right we found lots of tarpon in the 10 to 30lb range and jumped a few before Dale finally hooked up solid with a nice fish on a 9wt. rod. Here's our only decent photo as the fish pulled us away from the bridge shadows...

The night fishing the rest of this week will start as the sun goes down and should be very good....

Like my last report said, I'm putting in a lot of time in the shop each week filling orders now. Some fly tying but just as often it's luremaking... Here's a couple of photos of an order of jigheads that went out of state yesterday....

This small order was a dozen each of 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2oz heads for Gulp or plastic tail jigs. I began making these up since it's difficult to find what you want in the stores...As usual orders are filled strictly to customer's specs.
