Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
Winter in South Florida makes for Some Great Fishing!
Winter has finally arrived in South Florida. It's almost February and we have finally had some cold weather move into town. The more seasonal weather definitely made a difference to some of our fishing as you will see. Unfortunately for me and Get Em Sportfishing Charters we have had more cancellations recently than days on the water. I have had clients book a charter only to have to cancel due to cold, all day wind or all day rain. In many cases had they braved some of the elements they would have been rewarded with a special and memorable day on the water! When I haven't had clients to fish I have been doing some family trips with great results.
This is what has been happening in South Florida.
North Bay continues to be a difficult place to fish. For clients that enjoy throwing Hookup lures tipped with a soft plastic bait the action has been good. Sea trout, ladyfish, jacks, small sharks, tripletail, bluefish, barracudas and snapper have been eager at times to eat these baits.
South Bay has had some pretty good Spanish mackerel, snapper and grouper action.
I have not fished offshore due to the weather!
Flamingo in Everglades National Park has been the best place to fish. Fishing in Florida Bay with Hookup lures tipped with shrimp and Cajun Thunder floats tipped with shrimp we have had sheepshead, redfish, tripletail and over 50 snook in just a matter of hours. During my Flamingo trips we encountered manatees, bald eagles, American crocodiles, white pelicans, ospreys, rosette spoonbills, big sharks, sea turtles, bottle nose dolphins and so much more.
I have made a few trips along the Tamiami Trail looking for snook on artificial lures with spotty success. On my first trip we had close to 50 snook to 8 pounds. Then just a week later no snook but we did have a few cichlids. On my last trip out on the trail we had 8 snook to 8 pounds.

South Florida Fishing Forecast:
Winter is here and the fishing in South Florida is about to explode. With water temperatures rising sea trout and snook will start their spawning seasons. Bigger fish and bigger numbers of fish! Spanish mackerel, bluefish and kingfish are heading north for the summer. As they pass the Miami area they always provide a months' worth of action. Big jack crevalles will be chasing baitfish schools in North Bay and big tarpon will be stealing baits intended for other fish. Offshore we will see kingfish and Spanish mackerel, bonitos, sailfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna feeding right alongside each other. In Flamingo in Everglades National Park we will see the return of all of the migratory birds as they fill the park and make unbelievable sunrise pictures. Fishing for snook, redfish, sheepshead, blackdrum, snapper, sea trout, jacks ladyfish, sharks, tripletail, cobia and more will be as e exciting light tackle fishing as one could wish for.
