Continued Good Dolphin/Mahi Action Off Miami

Capt. Dave Kostyo
October 27, 2015
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

While the wind has been blowing steady from an easterly direction and the seas have been kicked up, the good news is that these conditions have made for some GREAT dolphin/mahi fishing in depths ranging from 90 to over 900 feet. Throw in the fact that there large schools of bait offshore too. The fish have been averaging in the 8 - 12 pound range with a good chance at a larger fish.

On my previous trip, we found the mahi in the 130 - 140 foot range. The next day the fish moved offshore some and it required a little longer run to find the fish. The frigate birds have been putting us on the fish. Find them and if they are beating the water's surface you'll find the mahi.

My most recent trip with Brad C had us working our way offshore to find blue water, Sargasso weed lines, and frigate birds in the 850 - 950 foot range. Slow trolling live pilchards produced action with numerous fish. We put 6 mahi in the fish box and missed about that many more. Then the green water starting working it's way into the area and shutting down the action.

Our next move was to start heading back toward Haulover Inlet. It wasn't long before Brad spotted a half dozen frigates chowing down on a school of frantic ballyhoo being chased by several nice size dolphin/mahi. We hooked up 3 more fish and put two more in the fish box before heading in.

Action like this will continue as the mahi migrate south from the northern waters.
