Cooler Temperatures and Hot Fishing in South Florida!

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
We are in the second week of December and for the most part it still seems like Summer. Since September South Florida has seen schools of mullet, some fingers, some black and the others silver slide by us with many staying in our area. Joining this bait has been big schools of glass minnows, pilchards, threadfin herring and Spanish sardines. During a normal fall migration this baitfish attracts large schools of Spanish mackerel, bluefish, pompano, jacks, ladyfish, juvenile kingfish, snapper and groupers but for the past few years due to warmer fall's we are seeing smaller groups of these fish staying in our area. At first glance this may look like mediocre fishing for South Florida but that isn't true. If you are flexible and let the conditions dictate what you target the day you fish great fishing opportunities present themselves.
During recent North Bay charters my clients have caught sea trout, snook, small tarpon, large barracudas, sharks, gag groupers, mutton and mangrove snappers, jack crevalles to 11 pounds and ladyfish. Most of these fish were caught using live baitfish caught with my cast net. We fished these baitfish free lined and hooked to a Mustad Ultra Point short shank hook and from under a Cajun Thunder float. We also had Spanish mackerel, bluefish and juvenile kingfish that ate Rapala #8 and #10 X Raps. The sea trout were caught on Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp soft plastic.
Fishing in South Bay is producing barracuda, snapper, grouper, porgies and a few Spanish and cero mackerel plus an assortment of jacks, bluerunners and bluefish and there is always a possibility that a school of pompano will intercept our baits.
Flamingo out of Everglades National Park has been red hot for Spanish mackerel, bluefish, snapper, bluerunners, jacks, shark plus a few cobia, tripletail and pompano. This fishing is done in open water surrounded by a million crab traps. We anchor the boat using my Talon or Minn Kota Ulterra trolling motor and chum heavy with Aquatic Nutrition Inc. chum. Once the fish pick up the chum scent we toss live shrimp hooked to a Hookup lure jig head or we float a shrimp back into the chum line with a Cajun Thunder float and a Mustad long shank hook. As long as the tide is moving the bites come one after another. Snook, redfish, sea trout, black drum and sheepshead can be targeted in the creeks, rivers and along the mangrove lined shorelines.
If offshore fishing is your thing when the weather allows me I will slip offshore after catching enough bait to keep the fish biting. On the offshore scene kingfish, Spanish mackerel, dolphins, bonitos, blackfin tuna and sailfish are the targeted species.

If you read the Miami Herald in print or on the web you may have noticed that the Miami Herald has not had a Fishing Report for the past few weeks. I was asked by the Herald to stop writing that report. I was informed that the Sports Department had to release all of their free-lance writers due to a lack of funds. I am not sure if they will have a fulltimer pick up that article or not. Having grown up in South Florida I had the pleasure of reading Vic Dunaway, Jim Martinoff, Marty Klinkenberger, Jim Hardy and Sue Cocking's articles and fishing reports over my lifetime. I always looked forward to seeing those reports every Friday and Sunday and then Thursday and Sunday. It's sad that a fishing community like ours can't support a Fishing Report once a week. If I was asked to do it again I would not hesitate to do just that. I'm not sure if a letter to the editor or a call to Herald will make a difference but it may! Ton's of baitfish are pouring into our Bays and sliding south along our beaches and the hungry predators are going nuts on them. That kind of action will be happening on and off for the next three months. Snook, tatrpon, redfish, sea trout, sharks. ladyfish, jacks, tripletail, cobia, pompano, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, black drum and sheepshead will all be feeding in Flamingo throughout the fall and into the winter. And the birding is getting better every day in Flamingo.
