Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
December has been hot and we are not talking about the weather. The fishing has been very good this past month. To say that we had a variety of species would be an understatement. Be it sailfish, kinghfish, mahi, snapper, or grouper we have catching them all.
Here is an example of what I am talking about. Gil and Mary Muroti fished with me this past week. Since Gil and his wife belong to a fishing club in which Mary was competing for top female angler they wanted to catch a variety of fish to turn in for points. My challenge was to come up with a certain mix of species that they had not caught so that they could maximize the amount of points they could turn in. We immediately set out to net lots of bait. After that was done we set off for an area with wrecks and rubble piles that I fish. To make a long story short we would end up with a kingfish, spanish mackerel, 4 false albacore, amberjack, mahi-mahi, sailfish and 3 mutton snapper with the largest weighing 16 ˝ pounds. I spoke to Gil Wednesday and Mary is now in first place at her fishing club. Way to go Mary.
My next trip I had a young man by the name of Preston whose father treated him to a day of fishing. We ended up with 3 or 4 false albacore, 2 nice mahi-mahi, 2 mutton snapper to 11 #'s and a black grouper that weighed 26#'s. He was a very tired young man. Nice catch Preston.
These trips illustrate the kind of action that is going on now. At anytime we have the ability to catch several different types of game fish. It will only get better as the year goes on. The sailfishing has been good. What has been hit or miss has been the current. This dictates how hot the sailfish action is going to be. But the sailfish are here. In addition to the sailfish we have been catching mahi on almost every trip the fish have ranged from small schoolies to large gaffers.
What has really kept me busy has been the bottom bite. We have been catching large mutton snapper up to 16#'s, red and black grouper to 26#'s and amberjack. The bottom fishing has been as good as I have seen it in a while.
I will be fishing for tarpon this weekend so stay tuned for an update. If you are able to fish oddball hours we should be able to find tarpon in the bay so give me a call if you want to catch one of the hardest fighting fish around.
