Decent Bite On The Edge

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
October 15, 2008
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Although business has been on the slow side, which is typical for this time of year, the fishing has been good. We have been catching several different species of fish. The most consistent bite has been the kingfish bite. We have been getting fish into the mid 20# range. These fish have almost all come on our deep rod. Once you were able to find these fish it has been easy to catch your daily limit. I have been able to cast net bait on the flats in front of Haulover Inlet. This in turn has allowed me to live chum and really bring in these fish.

Mahi-mahi are still coming thru in waves. A lot of theses fish have been taken under floating debris from all the hurricanes and tropical depressions we have had in the Caribbean. The sizes on these fish have ranged from small fish to some rather good size fish. As I am writing this the winds are blowing 23 knots out of the east and the air is a little cooler signaling that the sailfish will start to show up shortly in good numbers and the sailfish bite will start to go off.

The amberjacks have been on the county wrecks waiting for some one to drop a bait down to them. In addition to this the reef has been holding some mutton snapper and yellowtails.

We were also experienced the fall mullet run and we were able to get in on some of the action. The bait schools were so thick and the predators so plentiful that we would just net bait put one on the hook and watch the rod bend over. It was that easy. Unfortunately the bait run ended as fast as it begun but we will be there again next year for some great action. As one species of fish leaves another enters and soon the Spanish mackerel, tarpon, sailfish and mahi will be waiting for us and the season will be underway. And despite financial turmoil, elections and times of uncertainty the sun will rise in the east set in the west, the fish will migrate and I will be waiting for them on the edge. Till next time.

Best of Luck…

Capt Gil Gutierrrez
