Early December Fishing

Capt. Dave Kostyo
December 20, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's time to get caught up again with some of the fishing activity aboard Knot Nancy.

After braving NE/ENE wind @ 18 - 25 knots, Brad Coren opted to fish in calmer waters after catching one dolphin (mahi-mahi) offshore. Inshore, we anchored up over the edge of a grass flats and started chunking with pilchards. It didn't take long before the bluefish action started. It came in spurts and we finished the trip with 10 bluefish.

Art Berardelli, Dave Eschmeyer, and Eric Nagy also braved some healthy wind and sea conditions of ENE/E @ 17 - 22 knots. The offshore fishing was very slow with only a cut off by a small shark. Once again we moved inshore over some grass flats. We caught a half dozen seatrout, a bluefish, and a jack crevalle before moving to Haulover Inlet. Once anchored at the Inlet, we got a large school of 8 - 12 pound jack crevalles going with our live chum. When we pulled anchor, we had caught a dozen of the large jacks.

Brad, Bruce, and David Boersma along with Kevin Gorman had much better conditions during their trip. With the wind from the SE/SSE @ 8 - 14 knots we were able to do some running and gunning as well as slow trolling for mahi-mahi. We found two pallets floating in 500' that had several dolphin on them. By the time several other boats moved in to the same area, we had 4 mahi in the fish box and the remainder of the school had moved on. With the sun getting low in the western sky, we moved in shallower and topped off the fish box with a 17.5 pound kingfish caught 60 feet down on the downrigger in 148'.

Brad Coren took his five year old son Alex on his first fishing trip. Also along on the trip was Brad's uncle, Harold Coren. The wind was up again from the ENE/E @ 15 - 20 knots. We opted for the calm waters of Biscayne Bay. It was a day of first's for Alex. He caught his first seatrout, bluefish, and jack crevalle. He discovered chumming with chunks and hosing down the boat. Between moves to several spots, he got in a nap and had a sandwich and soda.
