End Of April - Miami Fishing Report

Capt. Dave Kostyo
April 28, 2016
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

April has lived up to its reputation of larger dolphin/mahi coming through the Miami/Miami Beach are. Along with the mahi, the blackfin tuna are also here. They're ranging in size from the small mini-football size to over 30 lbs.

Find some current and blue water and it won't take long before rods will start bending over with hooked up fish. Don't forget to put the bottom rod down also as there are some tasty mutton snapper to be caught also.

On my last several trips, the mahi action has been anywhere from 110 feet out to as far as 400 feet. Frigate birds have been putting us on the larger mahi. They have been ranging in weight from schoolie size to 19 pounds. I hear lots of stories of 25 and 35 pound mahi being caught. All the weights I post are actual weights on a scale back at TNT Marine Center, not eyeball weights.

Tuna birds have been the key for the smaller blackfin tuna. We've been finding them out as deep as 500 feet. Move back inside of 200 feet and the much bigger blackfins are cooperating nicely. Once hooked, do your best to get them to the boat as fast as you can as there have been plenty of sharks around to take the major portion of your blackfin. On a recent trip we have that issue and the portion we got back weighed in at 17 lbs.

Move inshore for some tarpon action, and it's been best in the bay after dark. This tarpon action requires heavier set drags, and muscling or trying to muscle the tarpon away from numerous obstructions. Sometimes you win and other times you get schooled by the tarpon. It's gorilla tarpon fishing at it's best.

This action should continue on into May so give me a call or send me an email and schedule your charter fishing trip to get in on the fun and some tasty fillet dinners.
