End of February Report

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
February 28, 2013
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

What a month it has been. I have practically been fishing non-stop the last 2 weeks of February and the month of February overall has been very busy. So then let's get to the fishing part shall we. The best and most consistent bite has been the tarpon bite. At one point I had almost 8 straight days of tarpon fishing in a 12 day period. We caught fish on every one of those trips except one. The fish ranged from 50-120#'s. I don't see the bite slowing down for a while. The only difference is that the fish seemed to have moved a little further south. Starting March 8th I have several more tarpon trips scheduled so stay tuned for more updates. I have said it before and I will say it again you don't need to run far offshore to catch some of the biggest fish in Florida. In addition to the tarpon we are catching ladyfish, bluefish, mackerel and snappers like never before. We had 2 trips where we could not drift more than 45 seconds without catching something and to be honest the fish almost became a nuisance because they would eat the baits before a tarpon even had a chance find it. I guess it's not an entirely bad to problem to have.
The sailfish seem to be biting a little more consistent these past two weeks. There have been a couple of days where multiple fish were caught. Hopefully this trend will continue as the year progresses. Most of these fish were either tailers or were caught on the kite. Luckily there have been other fish to entertain us while fishing the edge. We caught a couple of mahi-mahi on the kites and flat lines and my friend Dave Kostyo had a very nice 30# mahi-mahi this past week.
Another fish that came on strong this past couple of weeks were the kingfish. We had a couple of days where we caught several fish and one day in particular where we caught over 9 kings in a 5 hour period. The kings ranged into the 35# mark. On that particular trip where we caught the 9 kingfish we also caught 2 mahi-mahi, a 250# shark, and lost 2 other fish that will remain a mystery. The bottom bite has also been steady. The only bad part is that we have had to release all those beautiful grouper. I hope the fish Gods are watching this! Come May 1 I will be anchored up putting a hurt on the grouper. If you want to catch some bottom fish make your reservations now it looks to be a good upcoming grouper season.

Well that is it for now, overall fishing is getting steadier by the day and should remain that way. If you would like to experience any of this action give me a call and let me know what you want to try and catch and we will put a game plan together to make it happen.
Thanks and till next time
Best of Luck…
