Fishing Is Off The Hook

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
May 2, 2011
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

That would really be the only way to describe the action that has taken place recently. I know that there has been some time since my last report, and I do apologize, but that is due to the fact that I have fished the previous 19 days and only have 2 days left in April and a quarter of May is already booked. To my past, present, and future customers I thank you for keeping me busy. Now on to the fishing!
We will start off with the only real bad news, mahi-mahi. For those of you that love to catch mahi you will have to wait a little longer for them to show up. We have caught some but they have been very inconsistent and not very large in size. But they should show up in better numbers as we move forward. So be patient and they will show up.
Now onto the positive part of my report. The blackfin tuna have shown up. After catching smaller 8-12 blackfins for a couple of weeks we finally have caught our first large blackfin of the year with a 28# hitting the deck. We have also added several fish in the mid twenty to low thirty pound range. The best way to target these fish is with a late afternoon trip where we will experience low light conditions. A 30# blackfin on 20# line test is a tough customer. So what do you do while you wait for the blackfins to show up…
We fish for everything else. The sailfish bite continues to be strong. We caught sailfish on every one of our trips except 2 where we had a spell of green water and no current. Thankfully those conditions only lasted a couple of days. We have been averaging about 2-3 sailfish per trip. This trend should continue given good conditions. Mixed in with the sails have been kingfish and false albacore. The kings have ranged from the single digits up into the high 30# mark.
What has really exploded has been the bottom fishing. The mutton snapper have been biting very well. Our best day was 8 fish up to 12#'s and our largest fish was a 14# fish. But to be very honest we have been catching muttons on almost every trip giving my customers something to take home and remember us by. In addition to the muttons we have caught black grouper in the 20# range, several cobias in the mid 30# range and several amberjacks up to 60#'s. If you want to target the muttons than try to book your date around the full moons of June, July and August.
Last but not least the tarpon have been cooperating as one would expect this time of year. We have been catching them on the beach, inlets and bay. We have been averaging about 2-4 fish a night in the 40-110# range.
Well that brings us up to date. I will try to post some more reports as soon as possible. Don't miss out on this spring bite that is going on right now. Give me a call and let's go get in on some of the action.
Till Next Time
Best of Luck…
