Fishing Report Roundup For Springtime

Capt. Dave Kostyo
May 8, 2015
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's been a while since my last report. I've been busy catching a variety of fish both offshore and inshore. Let's get caught up with the action.

Offshore the variety has ranged from sailfish, kingfish, blackfin tuna, bonito, AJ's, shark, and dolphin (mahi-mahi). How good the action will be on any given day depends on whether or not there is current, blue water, and a bit of wind. On the days when those factors are good, the action is good. When you find nothing but green water and no current, then the action can be slow at best. That's when fishing a variety of techniques can save the day.

Move inshore for tarpon and that's a different story. You can expect between 3 to 6 shots at tarpon during a 4 hour period. On the outside, the tarpon have turned on to crabs and it still doesn't hurt to put out 1 shrimp. The fish have ranged in size from 60 - 150 pounds. The one bad news factor is that there are sharks chasing the tarpon while we are fighting them. This happens most often when the tarpon get into the deep water of the main channel at Government Cut. If they stay on the north or south side of the jetties, I have not experienced a shark problem so far this season.

Move inside to the Bay and the average size of the tarpon has gone up quite a bit since last season. A 30 to 50 pound tarpon has been the norm. This year, however, we've been encountering many brute size tarpon from 80 to over 100 pounds. Most of the time, these size tarpon will find structure to cut us off. On several occasions, the tarpon co-operated and swam in the right direction and we have caught and released several 80, 90, and 100 pound tarpon. Shrimp and crabs are getting the job done in the Bay.

It's back offshore starting tomorrow with an afternoon/evening combination trip. After that, it's several day trips. Time to go and catch more fish.

Give me a call or send me an email to set up your fishing adventure aboard Knot Nancy.
