Fishing With The Stars

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
June 15, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing has been great since my last report. In addition to the fishing I had the honor of sharing a couple of hours on the water with Jason Taylor from the Miami Dolphins and local radio disc jockey Paul Castronovo. First let's get to the fishing. Fishing on the edge has been great. We are still catching a mixed bag on the edge. Here is the breakdown.

Sailfishing has been good. When we were able to find the right conditions we were able to catch a couple of sails. Josh and Carrie Herbet fished a 6 hour trip and ended up catching 4 sails, 2 kings and a mutton snapper. I expect the sailfish bite to slow down a bit as we head into summer.

The mahi are definitely here. The only bad part is that they are a little further offshore so we will have to do a bit of searching to find some dorado but that is typical for this time of year. Those of you who love to fish for dolphin now is your time of year so let's get after them.

The bottom bite is also good we caught some amberjack, muttons and african pompano. We also had some fish we could not stop and they made it back to the wreck. We'll get them next time. In addition to the bottom action we have also been catching kingfish and bonitos to round out the action.

The tarpon bite has been excellent. The tarpon have not let us down as of yet. I was able to find fish on each and every trip we had. The fish have also been on the large side. I had one trip in particular where we caught one fish that was fought by 2 people. At the very end they handed me the rod with the fish still on and said "that they had enough" and wanted no part of this fish. The night ended very early going 1 for 1 and fishing all of about 45 minutes. The harder you fight a tarpon the harder they seem to fight back.

I had the pleasure of fishing with Jason Taylor, well we were showing him how we go about catching bait in the morning by cast netting pilchards and using sabiki rigs. Since Jason is now part of the SeaVee family I am sure we will be seeing more of him on the water in the very near future. I also had the privilege of fishing the Saltwater Slam with local radio personality Paul Castronovo and although we did not win we did have a great time onboard the beautiful SeaVee 43.

Well that is it for now as we switch into our summer mode look for the mahi to pick up and the night fishing to also get into full swing.

Till Next Time

Best of Luck…
