Great May Fishing

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
June 4, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

That describes the fishing for me for the month of May. We have been catching all sorts of species the past several weeks. Let me give you a break down of the action species by species.

On my most recent trip with Tuco Carvahulo and his father we found ourselves fishing a hard blue edge in front of the blue and green diamonds. One of the requirements of this trip was 12# line max. In that 4 hour span we caught a sailfish, a couple of bonitos, a mutton snapper, a couple of kingfish and a 48# cobia. Not bad for a couple of hours. I have a caught a couple of cobias in the past 2 weeks with the biggest being a 48# fish. We have been catching them close to several of the well known public wrecks. This week we also caught African Pompano off another wreck. So take a couple of minutes and drop a bait on some of these man made and natural structures you just never know what you will get.

We caught tarpon on all of our dedicated tarpon trips this month. We caught fish into the 110# class. Unfortunately this action will soon come to a close the further we move into summer. But the fish are defiantly still there. I will be doing several more tarpon trips in the next couple days so I will let you know how we faired. We have been catching all of our fish on crabs.

We have caught sailfish and then some on all of our offshore trips this month. The sailfish bite this year has been great and continues to be strong even though the water is starting to heat up. We have been getting them off the kite and flat lines mostly on threadfin herring.

The kingfish have been biting well but we have been catching them in on the shallow side (50-90') of things. As the water continues to heat up look for these fish to move deeper offshore. It is not uncommon to catch these fish on the bottom in 180-220 ‘of water as we move into summer. If your bottom rod continues to get cut off put on a piece of wire and you may be surprised to pull up that smoker king from deep water.

Well that is it for now. I apologize for being late (again) with my report but the fish are biting and your not going to catch them sting on the couch so get out there and catch um up.

Till Next Time

Best of Luck
