Groupaaaaa Time!!!

Capt. Gil Gutierrez

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well my favorite time of the year is finally here. If you have fished with me in the past you know that I love to grouper and snapper fish.
May 1 marks the opening of grouper season and also one of the best times of year for mutton snapper. As you will see from my pictures the snapper and grouper fishing has been very good. On a bunch of trips we caught groupers as if they knew that the season was closed and it was safe to eat our baits. But they are no longer safe as of today. We caught mainly gag grouper with some black groupers thrown in. All the pictures you are seeing in this report were all caught in the last 2 weeks. So now is the time to get in on some great bottom fishing.
Sail fishing has been ok. Unfortunately, with the summertime conditions we are experiencing here in Florida the conditions aren't exactly conducive to sailfish. This time of year our winds turn to the south easterly quadrant which isn't bad for sailfish but it's not an ideal wind from the north to northeast direction which sailfish prefer. Again we are catching some but the overall numbers are down. This trend will stay this way for a while, which is normal. As we progress further into the summer the sailfish bite will slow down. Again that is normal for this time of year.
Now let's talk about one fish that has been biting real well, Kingfish.
The king bite has been outstanding. This week we had fish in the 50# class. We have caught the kings on everything from the kite to the bottom rod and everything in between. We had 2 days of limiting out on kingfish. Many of you have been asking about blackfin tuna. We did catch some last week but not in any really big numbers. I'm waiting for the blackfin bite to explode any day. I am starting to hear of them with more frequency so I think they should start to push into our area. And lastly tarpon. Tarpon fishing right now is as good as it gets. I did a bunch of trips last week; we caught fish on every one of those trips. The only trip where we failed to get a fish to the boat we still managed to jump fish but we failed to keep the hook in them. We still have some time left in the tarpon fishing season but it will slow down the further we get into the summer so don't wait too long. So that is it for this month's report. Give me a call if you want to get in on any of this action. Thanks and until next time…
Best of Luck, Lucky Fishing Charters
