Headboat Habits

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past few weeks we've had amazing fishing conditions, with very little rough water to deal with. This also may be the reason we've had slow fishing! Yes, I do feel we need to have those cold fronts running by us, followed by a good Nor'easter, to move fish, and stir things up.

The slow fishing of last month changed quickly this past weekend, with a huge cold front bringing in the coolest weather of the year, and with it a push of kingfish as well as the long awaited run of sailfish! The sails are tailing by, some biting, some not, but exciting to see none the less. We've caught sails this week on live bait on the kite as well as flat lines, and on dead bait, usually ballyhoo or sardines on a three hook rig.

The kings have slammed us on many trips, but porpoise have also arrived with the kings, eating all they can catch! We've had trip where half the fish hooked were taken by porpoises. We have no answer for this. I guess the way to look at it is that they have a right to live and eat, and maybe all we're entitled to is their leftovers! This week we also have caught several nice groupers (which were released) as well as several wahoo, caught trolling between drifts on Billy Bait trollers. The groupers were caught on standard bottom rigs with either a live pinfish or ballyhoo plug on a circle hook. A really nice 20 lb gag was caught on a jig and worm by Ariel.

Now is a great time to party boat fish! All the cool fish are showing up, and we are not crazy busy. This will give our anglers wonderful opportunities to catch very special fish, and an economical price.

Do you want to fish a long all day? We do 10 hour trips every other week, fishing with dead bait, live bait, and vertical jigging. For $120, tip included, you can't beat the price! We hold these trips to 12 to 16 passengers. Check out our events on Facebook, "Reward Fishing Fleet" and join in!
