HOT SSOUTH FLORIDA SPRING FISHING !

Capt. Alan Sherman
April 28, 2011
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

With all of the Spring Breaks going on at different times and in different locations and with Easter and Passover holidays falling at almost the same time there have been a lot of people in town looking to fish and that's just what they did. Fish! In most cases they did more than fish they caught fish. In the past three weeks I have fished a lot of parties with young kids. Some of these kids were new comers to me and fishing but many I have fished for years and now many of these kids have turned into real fisher people. It's exciting to see so many of them remember where we left off the last time they fished and how better they have become at the sport. Check out their pictures and smiling faces!

Once again it's been a while since I have had a few moments to write a new fishing report and while I have a few minutes to spare lets see what I can come up with.

Let's start with the local fishing report out of Miami where inshore fishing has produced a few nice Spanish mackerel, small bluefish, jacks from small two pounders to fish over 10 pounds, tarpon, snapper, barracudas and lots of real nice sea trout plus a few sharks. Baitfish schools have thinned a bit but from day to day they have been easy to hard to catch. My clients have caught fish with free lined live baits, baits fished on the bottom, baits fished under a Cajun Thunder float, baits hooked to a Hookup lure and on many different types of artificial lures.

The ocean fishing is producing kingfish with some that have exceeded 50 pounds, sailfish, blackfin tuna, bonitos and dolphins.

I have not fished in South Biscayne bay for a few months now because water temperatures have risen into the 80's and the groupers and mutton snappers have moved on out to deeper water.

Fishing in Flamingo in Everglades National Park has been fair mostly because winds have been brisk and the Florida Bay waters have been dirty. Catch the weather nice and lots of tarpon, sea trout, redfish, jacks, ladyfish, and sharks of many different sizes, tripletail, permits and cobia are available.

Freshwater fishing in the Everglades is about as good as gets with loads of largemouth bass being caught in the canals. Water levels are dropping like crazy and all of the fish are being forced into the canals where they become easy targets for anglers. Floating Rapala lures are catching a lot of fish as are soft plastics and shiners.

Recent Catches:

Fishing in Flamingo with Eddie, Rueben and Livan the guys caught four tripletail of 5, 7, 8 and 9 pounds on shrimp and Cajun Thunders, lost a cobia to a 300 pound bull shark, sea trout, jacks, ladyfish and had many shots at tarpon.

Again I am in Flamingo for a full day with Dave, Bill and Harvey. The wind is up a bit today but the guys still have shots at tripletails and catch and release a few small ones plus sea trout, jacks and ladyfish before we find a sheltered shoreline where we hook up on two large tarpon that we lose plus a few sharks.

Today I am in North Biscayne Bay with David G and his girlfriend Katie and Katie's dad Lester for four hours. The fishing was a little slow but still produced sea trout, needlefish and lizardfish that ate live baits under a Cajun Thunder float and ¼ ounce red Hookup lures tipped with Gulp baits.

Back on the water with Dan, Kim and Nathan in North Biscayne Bay and offshore for a full day of fishing. After catching a bunch of bait we have some shots at jacks and tarpon in the Bay but no hook ups so we head offshore where we get into a bunch of small dolphin releasing at leaser a dozen that ate live pilchards hooked to a 1/0 Mustad Ultra Point short shank hook before turning our attention to the school of small blackfin tuna that are nearby. The guys catch a few for dinner and then we head inshore where we catch sea trout, jacks, lizardfish, bluerunners, snappers and a trigger fish. head offshore where we find

Today I have Wayne on board and the weather is great so we catch our bait and head offshore. In no time we are into tunas and bonitos that are eating our live pilchards and chum baits as fast as we can get the baits in the water. In between fish Wayne casts a Rapala Flat Rap and soon is into a nice tuna but the hooks pulled. A few minutes later I see a sailfish swim by a fish that Wayne has always wanted to catch but even though this fizz is going nuts on our chum we can't get him to strike our baits and the fish moves on and so do we. We make another drift and in no time Wayne is hooked up and here comes mister sailfish. This fish is hot and jumps at least a dozen times as it strips hundreds of yards of Suffix braided line off the Daiwa Advantage 4000 spinning reel. The Key Largo rod has a great arc in it and the fish is really tired. Things look great but as Wayne adds a little extra pressure with his finger to the spool the sailfish lunges and line breaks at the reel. Oh Well there is always next time. We head inshore where Wayne catches trout, jacks, cudas, lizardfish and bluerunners casting Hookup lures tipped with Gulp shrimp.

Today we are in Flamingo with Dennis, Barney, Peter and Alex. The guys are looking for action and I hope I can provide it for them. The wind is up Again and the water is real dirty. The guys fished real hard but it was a tough day on the water. Between the four guys they caught and released sea trout, a jack crevalle, lots of catfish, tween sharks in the 30 to 40 pound range and lost a shark over a hundred pounds and released a nice snook that was 32 inches and 10 pounds that ate a live ballyhoo hooked to a Hookup lure.

Another nice day and we are in North Biscayne Bay for a four hour charter with Patrick and Eric. Bait is hard to come by today. After catching some threadfin herring I take the guys offshore where they release two big bonitos and miss a few kingfish before heading inshore where we get into a few jacks and release two four pound jacks.

Today I have Sid G the past owner of Hookup lures plus his cousin Barry. Sid had been offshore in his own boat the past two days and had had no luck so today we are hoping to just catch a few fish. We start the day off by loading alive well with plenty of bait. Now its time to catch some fish! Casting Hookup lures in and around the baitfish schools the guys land some real quality sized sea trout. WE move from one grass flat to another catchimng and releasing over two dozen sea trout on the Hookup lures tipped with a Gulp shrimp. I anchor in a spot that I have had some mackerel action in April before and start chumming and in no time we have large mackerel blasting the baits. We hook many but land none so we move on. Our last spot is loaded with four to five pound jacks that are going nuts on our pilchards. Some mangrove sappers join in and then a 30 pound barracuda eats one of our jacks and ends our day.

Today I have Dr. Norma and his grandsons and nephews Eric, Teddy and Yoni. We are out for six hours and the fishing is good in North Biscayne Bay. By days end the boys have released a bunch of sea trout, jacks and barracudas. Over 30 fish!
More trips to come!

Check out my report in the Miami Herald's Sports section under Fishing Updates each Thursday, the Florida Sportsman Magazines South Florida Internet Fishing Report (www.floridaspotsman.com), my monthly Action Spotter Fishing Report for the South Region in the Florida Sportsman Magazine each month.

I have recently changed outboard engines on my 22' Pathfinder XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat. I had an opportunity to put one of the first Yamaha SHO 250 Four Stroke outboards on my boat and the difference has been just amazing. This engine has 25 more horsepower but carries 77 less pounds allowing me better hole shot while giving great cruising fuel efficiency. What more can a boater ask for?

I have been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new.
